Every year, the Astronaut Appearances Office (AAO) receives thousands of requests for NASA's astronauts to visit schools across the country. Only a few of these requests can be accommodated, so imagine our excitement when we learned that a real NASA astronaut would be visiting Hillsborough County Public Schools, including Gorrie Elementary!
Captain Bowen is one of NASA's few "active" astronauts, meaning he is eligible for flight assignment and has been on three missions, including STS-126, STS-132 and STS-133. The STS-126 mission was the 27th International Space Station (ISS) assembly mission when he and his crew delivered equipment and supplies and expanded the ISS living quarters! He is also the first submarine officer to be selected as an astronaut by NASA.
Our Science Night Leaders will welcome Captain Bowen to the podium, followed by a song from our chorus. All students are asked to wear red, white or blue in honor of this exciting and memorable event!
Due to limited seating, we will only be able to accommodate 100 parents for the assembly. Please sign-up today if you would like to attend so we can plan accordingly.
As we gear up for this exciting event, there is a galaxy of information on the web for you and your kids to enjoy! Please encourage them to explore the cosmos as Mr. Bowen will be able to take a few questions from our students!
On January 9, 2018, Stephen G. Bowen (Captain, U.S. Navy, Ret.), will visit Gorrie from 8:45 - 9:45 a.m. in the Coliseum. We couldn't be more thrilled to have him speak to our children about NASA, space and the importance of teamwork!
